Proclaiming The Faith
1 Corinthians 1:18 says, “The word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.” How true this is! To the one who is perishing for all eternity, the word of the cross is foolishness! But to us who believe, it is the power of God!
It was the word of the cross that our Lord sent His apostles into the world to proclaim. They were commissioned to preach that forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation are found only through Him. God’s proclaimers were instructed and trained not to impose their fleshly beliefs, cultural standards, or fallen desires for worldly success upon the Bible. They were instructed and trained to receive with open hands the treasures of God’s Word and deliver the Good News of Jesus (Mark 16:15, Luke 10:16, 2 Corinthians 5:20).
What do we need to hear today? What should sermons in Christian churches consist of? In the churches of our day, we should find nothing less and nothing more than what the first apostles proclaimed. Proclaiming the faith is none other than preaching the word of the cross from the Holy Scriptures. In the word of the cross, sinful humanity receives what God has delivered through His Son’s sinless life and death for us.
This is done through intense prayer and vigilant preparation. This is done through a restless, wrestling with the magnificent Words of Holy Scripture. This is done when the proclaimer crucifies his own ego and pride in order to give people what God wants them to have. This is done through the proclamation of the Law which shows us our sinful nature and our need for God. It is then done through the proclamation of the Gospel which delivers to us the precious Good News of God’s sinless Son Who died and rose for us. Give God all glory, thanks, blessing, and adoration that He has redeemed us through the cross!
